- שִׁיפוֹרָאm. = שוֹפָרָא 1) horn, trumpet, announcement. Nidd.38a ש׳ דירחא Ar. (ed. only ש׳) the shofar announcing the New Moon. Succ.34a; Sabb.36a Ms. M. (ed. שופרא), v. חֲצוֹצַרְתָּא. M. Kat. 27b שמע קל ש׳ דשכבא he heard the trumpet announcing a death in town; a. e.Pl. שִׁיפיֹרֵי. Ab. Zar.40a נפקי ש׳ דרבאוכ׳ Ms. M. (ed. נפק) the announcements of Raba went forth to prohibit it, and those of R. H. permitting it; ib. 57b. M. Kat. 17b קרי ביה אלפא ש׳וכ׳ sound into it (the pitcher) one thousand blasts (proclaiming the ban). Ib. מאי שיפ̇ור̇י שנפ̇ר̇עיןוכ׳ what does the blowing signify? That he will be punished. Shebu.36a בארבע מאה ש׳ שמתיהוכ׳ Barak declared the ban over Meroz with four hundred blasts of the trumpet; M. Kat. 16a; a. e. 2) (v. שוֹפָר) charity box. Gitt.60b ההוא ש׳ דהוה the charity box which was first kept in the house of R. J., and was transferred to ; (oth. opin. the shofar for public announcements).
